Terms
Free, open-source software you run yourself. Here is what that means.
Last updated: 2 October 2026
The licence
Mindbaton's source code is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0). You may use, study, change and share it under that licence. If you change it and let others use it over a network, the AGPL requires you to offer them your changed source. Fonts, icons and libraries bundled with it keep their own licences, listed in Credits.
No warranty
Mindbaton is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, as the AGPL states. To the fullest extent the law allows, the authors are not liable for any loss or damage arising from its use, including lost data and any charges from another company. Keep backups (see Backup and upgrade).
Your responsibilities
- You run Mindbaton on your own computer and are responsible for it: keeping it updated and secure, who can reach it, and the accounts you create on it.
- If you add other people to your install, you are responsible for handling their data lawfully and respectfully.
- Use Mindbaton only with services you are allowed to use, and follow their terms. You are responsible for the content you save.
- You are responsible for the AI keys you add and for everything they cost; see the next section.
AI keys and what they cost
Mindbaton works without any AI key. If you add one (Google Gemini, Groq, OpenAI or Anthropic's Claude), this applies:
- The key is your own account with that company. Its terms, prices, limits and privacy policy apply to you. The Mindbaton project is not a party to that agreement, does not resell their services and receives nothing from them.
- You pay for everything the key is used for. That includes use by Mindbaton on your install, by other people you added to it, under settings you chose (such as putting a paid key first or picking a larger model), because of a mistake in the software, or by someone who got hold of the key.
- The monthly limit and the cost shown in Mindbaton are estimates, not guarantees. They are worked out on your own computer from the token counts each answer reports and from prices written into the software. Prices change, providers count differently, and some use is not counted at all (for example a Gemini key on a Google project with billing turned on). Your real bill may be higher. Set a spending limit with the provider itself; that is the only limit that binds them.
- The project is not responsible for any charges. To the fullest extent the law allows, the authors and contributors are not liable for any fees, overage, taxes or other costs billed to you by an AI provider, however they arose.
- Keep your keys secret. They are stored on your own server. Securing that server, and revoking a key with its provider if it leaks, is up to you.
- What an AI writes can be wrong. Summaries, topic names and answers are generated text. Check anything that matters before you rely on it.
Experimental shared projects
Team Baton is opt in. The host controls invitations, access and optional external processing of shared messages. Automatic project processing can spend the host's provider credits; project budgets are conservative estimates. Reported progress and AI summaries are unverified. Hosts and teammates must review what they choose to share. During a host outage, clients can use dated cached context and queue updates, but live coordination is unavailable.
Other companies' products
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot, Cursor, Codex, OpenCode and other product names and logos are trademarks of their respective owners. They appear only to show what Mindbaton works with. Mindbaton is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of them.
The Mindbaton name
The code is yours to use under the AGPL, but please don't present a modified version as the official Mindbaton or use the Mindbaton name and Baton logo in a way that suggests the project endorses you.
Changes
These terms may change; the current version is always on this page, and past versions are in the project's history on GitHub. Questions: email support@mindbaton.com or open an issue.
Law
These terms are governed by the laws of India, without affecting any rights you have under the laws of where you live.
